Tastes Of Our Journey

Centennial Recipes

Celebrating 100 Years Through the Tastes of Our Past

Food has always been at the heart of our community. Long before recipe cards and measuring cups, our bubbes and zaides cooked from memory and instinct — a pinch of salt, enough flour until the dough felt right, schmaltz until it smelled like home. Their recipes weren’t written down in neat columns; they lived in their hands, their noses, and the stories they told while cooking.

We want to preserve those recipes before they are lost to time.

As part of our Kum A Heim centennial celebration, we are collecting family recipes to publish in a special online collection for the entire community to enjoy and carry forward. Whether it’s your grandmother’s brisket that took all day, a honey cake that only comes out right if you hum while you stir, or a kugel whose ingredient list reads “some noodles, some eggs, enough sour cream” — we want it all.

Don’t worry if the measurements aren’t precise. That’s the point. Submit it exactly as it was passed down to you — imperfect, human, and full of love.

To submit your recipe, please include:

The dish name

Ingredients (as exact or as approximate as you have them)

Instructions, in whatever form you remember them

Who the recipe belonged to and their connection to the community (optional but cherished)

Any story or memory that goes with it (the more the better)

These recipes will be compiled and shared online as a living tribute to the families, flavours, and traditions that built our community — and will nourish the generations still to come.

L’Chaim — and l’chaim to good food.

Bubba's Kugel Example

My grandmother made the best Kugel. She did alot by memory, but someone managed to get the ingredients the best they could. We still use the .. little of this, pinch of that method.. and it never fails us.
